Day 1 Lots of practical exercises and a reminder of the basics, hands on exercise out in open countryside Day 2 Hands on Mountain, Moorland and hill walking and Navigation with some off path navigating • Meet up and discuss over coffee review and refresh current abilities and knowledge, discuss needs and review content plan to meet these • Use a compass to follow accurate bearings and to check the direction of footpaths or other linear features on both map and ground. Using exercises and hands on • Learn how to plan a strategy for a day’s walking on moorland and think about how you would break each stage down • Understand and apply components of a navigational strategy to include ‘aiming off,’ ‘attack points’, ‘collecting features’, simplifying navigation, and apply them in varying terrain thinking about how you would use these and apply them • Exercises and practical demonstrations to gain an understanding of contour features, both large and small, on the map and on the ground • Demonstrate an understanding of factors affecting route choice. What may influence your choice of route and why? • Judge distance accurately on the map and on the ground. Practical exercises. • Employ simple relocation strategies learn how to relocate where you are. • Understand the effect of weather and staying safe in the moors and mountains. Demonstrate knowledge of the effects of fatigue and physical discomfort brought on by navigating in demanding countryside and/or extreme weather conditions. • Understand how to get relevant information that informs your day out on the hill • Kit – What do you need for a day on the hill including personal kit, food and basic first aid kit • Understand the impact walkers might have on the countryside, and how to minimise this when walking.
